Volunteerwork

Besides being a hostal we also offer the possibility of doing volunteer work in the area or in the jungle. At the moment we have two different projects in our area and you can help running the hostal:

- Isinlivi
- Malinguapamba
 
Isinlivi

Isinlivi is the village where you can find our hostal Llullu Llama. It is about 4 hours by bus from Quito. From this small village you can do great hikes in the Quilotoa area. In the village live indigenous people, but also mestiezos (mixture of Indigenous and Spanish people). The whole Quilotoa area is getting more and more popular with tourists who come to the area the enjoy one of the many hikes, visit one of the great indigenous markets, and of course the Quilotoa crater lake.
 
Our hostal will be the base of your volunteerproject. Besides helping us run the hostal you can help at the local school, primary or secondary and read books to the children in the village and from the surrounding communities. During your time in Isinlivi you will stay in the hostel, or it can be possible that during high season your accommodation will be arranged elsewhere in the village.

At the moment we are urgently looking for volunteers who would like to help run Hostal Llullu Llama. You can also combine this with teaching at the primary school. Food and board for free if you stay for a minimum of 2 months.

There are direct busses from Latacunga to Isinlivi. There is no internet in the village, but you can be reached by phone.
 
 What can you do as a volunteer?
•    helping at the hostel, with for example:
- cooking, if you like
- welcoming tourists
- giving information to tourists
- helping in the garden, etc.
•    teaching at the local primary school
•    reading books to the children of the village
•    help with updating our hiking book
•    all other activities that might occur.

We would like you to stay for a minimun period of 4 weeks in this project. It will take you sometime to get used to the way of working and living in a small Andean village. If you want to stay shorter please let us know and we can see what the options are. You will work 5 days a week, sometimes from Monday to Friday or when it is very busy we will ask you to help out in the weekend and take two days of during the week. On your free days you can hike around the region, visit the local markets, or travel around in Ecuador.
 
Price: $320,00 for 4 weeks this includes all your food and staying in Hostal Llullu Llama.
 
It will make your project much more fun if you speak some Spanish, so we would recommend that you take some Spanish classes first. For more information about volunteering with us and Spanish classes, please contact us.
 
Community of Malinguapamba
 
Malinguapamba is a small indigenous community in the Andes of Ecuador, 4 hours drive to get there from Quito and 3 to 4 hours hike or 40 minutes by car from Isinlivi.The community is on hiking distant from the Quilotoa crater lake and besides hiking up to the crater rim, you can do many other beautiful hikes in the area.
 
In this small indigenous community you can stay for 4 weeks to help teaching at the primary or secondary school. You can teach English but even better other subjects like math, working with computers, geography, etc.
 
During your time in the community you will stay at the house of the president of the community and you will be taken care of by him, his wife and their sons and families. After classes you can go on hikes and enjoy the beautiful surroundings! Of course it is also possible that you help out with other activities in the community like planting seeds, reforestation, or any other things they might need you help with.
 
There are direct busses to Malingua from Latagunga, but to make the start of your project a bit easier it is better that you first go to the town of Isinlivi. Here you will meet us and we will bring you by car to your project. We will also explain you about the way of life in the community. The village of Isinlivi is about 3 hours hike from Malingua and in case of problems, or if you just want to get away a day from the intense community life, you can always come back here to meet other volunteers or tourists.
 
The people in the village are really nice and will always want to help you with everything. Despite this it will take some time to get used to the life of an indigenous community, please take this in mind!

There is no phone and no internet in the community, but if you are not bothered by this you will have the time of your life!

Please keep in mind that Ecuador is a South American country with a completely different structure and organization compared to many Western countries. This means that things will go very different then you are used to and it can take a long time before things actually happen.
